Despite the strong currents and
the relatively mild climate of Istanbul, the sea in the Bosphorus has frozen
several times throughout history, even during the 20th century. The last time
the sea in the Bosphorus froze was in 1954 when people were able to cross from
one side of the strait to the other walking on the huge pieces of ice.

in 401, at
the time of the Byzantine Emperor Arcadius freeze lasted 20 days.
• in 739 in frozen again.
• In the year 755 all the Black Sea coast, Golden Horn and in the
northern part of the Marmara frozen all together.
• in 763 in Golden Horn coasts
100 paces distance, froze to a depth of 30 meters.
• in 928 ice-melting took four
months.
• in 1823, during the period of Mahmud
II, both the sea and the flowing water from the faucet
was frozen.

Arkadius zamanında donma 20 gün sürdü.
• 739 yılında yine dondu.
• 755 yılında Karadeniz kıyıları,
bütün Haliç ve Marmara’nın kuzey kesimleri boydan boya dondu.
• 763 yılında Haliç’te kıyılar
100 adım mesafeye, 30 metre derinliğe kadar dondu.
• 928’de buzların erimesi dört ay
sürdü.
• 1823’te 2. Mahmud döneminde hem
deniz hem musluklardan akan su donmuştu.
